So here goes our story of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. For those who were truly meant for this car and vice-versa, it is a dream come true. "Attainable exotic" is more than a buzz phrase pushed by Mitsubishi's marketing guys. There’s a reason the Eclipse is so popular and its slippery shape is most certainly prime among them. That it appeals equally to both sexes doesn’t hurt either. Let's start out with the paradise that is the Eclipse, upon first glimpse. Gleaming curves dominate, at the same time voluptuous and muscular, starting up front with a catfish-like nose and sweeping up to a high, rounded bottom. Like many of Mitsubishi's vehicles, the Eclipse is in tune with the tuners, the brushed aluminum gas cap, auto-off halogen headlamps and crystal clear taillights are just a few hints of the vehicle's big ol' nod to the aftermarket community. The engine may just be a little too much muscle for what the car can take. Only 117,255 miles, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 162 horsepower that powers the Eclipse, 5-speed manual that gets 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Peeling away from stop signs was always a blast and I never got tired of it. I always wanted to take the engine right up to its 6,500 rpm redline to hear the growl and feel the power, but once I got into 3rd gear I had to ease off because I was well over the posted speed limit. Six standard airbags include the required frontal impact airbags and seat mounted side impact devices to protect front occupants. Seatbelt pretensioners automatically tighten seatbelts to place the occupant in the optimal seating position during a collision. Front seats are built to feel more like a cockpit than a car. Tilt steering, cruise control, information display, power windows, power door locks, dual power mirrors. Tuner influence is most visible, however, when one looks into the backseat to observe quite possibly the largest subwoofer available in a vehicle straight from the factory. Taking up the back of what would be the entire middle seat, the device's 8" woofness pumps out more bass than a DJ bumpin' booty music after hours. It accompanies nine speakers belonging to a 650-watt Rockford Fosgate-sourced stereo system with Digital Signal Processing, and sports a 6-CD/MP3-compatible in-dash changer optionally controlled by steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Tinted windows, 50/50 split rear seatback folds down for more capacity. The Spyder’s fully independent suspension provides firm and sporty handling without being harsh, no doubt the front and rear anti-roll bars helping considerably. Four wheel disc with ABS, Anti-lock brakes feature Electronic Brake force Distribution, which balances front rear brake application in emergency stops. With the top up, driving at speeds up to 90 mph, the car was very quiet. With the top down it’s easy to have a normal conversation without raising your voice too much. Dropping the top is painless and simplistic, undo two latches, press and hold the power top button on the dash and 19 seconds later, no roof. The 4 windows are lowered as the roof lifts up and the rear deck opens like a clam shell to accept the top. The Spyder’s high quality cloth top folds completely out of site, underneath a flush fitting tonneau cover making it one of the best looking convertibles. Factory keyless entry with lock/alarm, alloy wheels with brand new tires. For those just looking for a tire squealing good time, however, the Eclipse delivers, and then some.
